Dr. Vijaya Arun Kumar, Wayne State University, USA

Dr. Kumar is an Associate Professor in Emergency Medicine at the Wayne State University (WSU), School of Medicine. His medical career began in India where he completed his medical school and diploma in public health, he then completed his residency, fellowship in clinical research in emergency medicine and a master’s in public health in the United States. Dr. Kumar is presently the Director of Research at the Emergency Department of Harper University Hospital, his research focus is cardiovascular emergency medicine and global health, he has authored numerous publications and has been the principal investigator for numerous clinical studies. Dr. Kumar is the co-chair of the institutional review board at WSU, on the editorial board of Michigan Journal of Public Health and a manuscript reviewer for annals of emergency medicine and JACEP.

His global health interests include development of clinical research, upliftment of women’s health and improvement of emergency medicine in resource limited, low and middle-income countries. Dr. Kumar is presently the associate director of the global health section in the department of EM at WSU and co-chair of the education section of the EMERGE network at University of Michigan. He has continued his passion for cardiovascular medicine through his research career, he secured a grant to study the outpatient follow up of low risk patients form the ED, his focus now is the association between COVID 19 and Thromboembolic disease and long COVID Syndrome. During the COVID 19 Pandemic he has been working on several global collaborative efforts to create a cohesive global effort, this includes a survey to assess the global response to the pandemic, comparison of ED triage and resilience of the health force during the pandemic. He is also presently working on several studies defining Long COVID in the ED.

He is the founder and co-director of the GH research collaborative (GHRC) at WSU which will hold their 3rd GH research training workshop in 2024. The group has mentored 64 participants from 22 countries so far and has led to numerous collaborations and continues to develop research capacity in LMICs.
